Does ACX Accept AI Audiobooks?

What ACX’s rules say about AI narration in 2026, the only AI routes onto Audible, and where AI-narrated audiobooks can go instead.

If you’ve made an audiobook with an AI voice, Audible is probably the first place you want it. No, ACX does not accept AI-narrated audiobooks you make yourself, as of October 2026. Its rules say your audiobook “must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized”, and that unauthorized text-to-speech or AI narration is prohibited. The only AI routes onto Audible are Amazon’s own: Virtual Voice for some Kindle ebooks, and Voice Replica for narrators.

This guide explains exactly what ACX’s rules say, how the two Amazon programs work, what Audible has said about the future, and where your AI-narrated audiobook can sell today.

What ACX’s rules say about AI narration

ACX’s audio submission requirements, dated April 15, 2026, are clear:

  • “Your submitted audiobook must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized.”
  • “Unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI, or automated recordings in ACX titles is prohibited.”
  • “Do not remit payment to a producer if you suspect unauthorized use of text-to-speech.”

So if you’ve made your audiobook with an AI voice tool, whether ElevenLabs, Google’s voices, Audiobook Generator or anything else, you can’t upload it to ACX as things stand. That includes an AI copy of your own voice made outside Amazon.

What “unless otherwise authorized” means

The phrase leaves room for AI narration that Amazon itself runs. In 2026 there are two such routes for indie authors and narrators, plus a program for selected publishers.

Amazon Virtual Voice

Virtual Voice is Kindle Direct Publishing’s own AI narration. It turns an eligible Kindle ebook into an audiobook, which then sells on Audible and Amazon.

KDP’s note: Virtual Voice is an invite-only beta for eligible ebooks.

What you need to know:

  • It’s invite-only, and US only. If your book is eligible, an “Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice” button appears on your KDP Bookshelf. You can join an interest list.
  • Your ebook must qualify. It must be live (not on pre-order), in English, Spanish, French or Italian, reflowable with a table of contents, not public domain, and not already have an Audible audiobook, including one on ACX.
  • It’s free during the beta. You choose a voice, adjust pauses and pronunciation in Virtual Voice Studio, and publish. Images and tables aren’t read.
  • You earn 40%. You set a price between $3.99 and $14.99, and it sells on Audible, Amazon, Alexa and Amazon Music Unlimited.
  • It’s labelled. Audible shows that it’s narrated with virtual voice.
  • KDP Select ties it to Audible. If your ebook is in KDP Select, the audiobook must be exclusive to Audible for that period.

ACX Voice Replica

Voice Replica lets an ACX narrator create an AI replica of their own voice and use it to narrate titles. It’s a limited beta, and the audiobook is credited “Narrated by [narrator]’s voice replica”. Rights holders pay the narrator a fee or a royalty share, as with any ACX production.

Voice Replica is for narrators working through ACX. It isn’t a way to upload an audiobook you made with an AI tool.

Audible’s program for publishers

In 2025, Audible began offering AI narration, and later AI translation, to selected publishers, with over 100 voices. It isn’t open to indie authors, and you can’t apply through ACX.

What happens if you upload AI narration anyway?

Don’t. Every ACX audiobook goes through a quality review, and AI narration breaks the rules you agree to when you upload. An audiobook found to use unauthorized AI can be rejected or removed, and your ACX account could be affected. Labelling AI narration as human is the fastest way to lose access to the biggest audiobook store, which isn’t worth it when other stores welcome AI narration that’s disclosed.

Will ACX accept AI audiobooks soon?

Maybe, but there’s no date. ACX’s requirements page now says Audible “is working to accept third-party TTS content from publishers and creators who are interested” and will “share more updates on timing and availability as our offering evolves.”

Until Audible announces how and when, plan as if ACX doesn’t accept outside AI narration. If it changes, an audiobook you’ve already made and kept the files for can be added later.

Where to publish an AI-narrated audiobook instead

These stores accept AI narration when you say so:

SpotifyYesTick “This audiobook uses digital voice narration”
Google Play BooksYesChoose “Synthesized voice” as the narrator
KoboYesList the narrator as “Synthesized Voice”
Apple BooksYes, through a distributorSay it in the narrator field and the description

Distributors don’t get you around ACX either. Voices by INaudio and Author’s Republic can deliver audiobooks to Audible, but only human-narrated ones, and not if the book is already claimed on ACX.

For many authors, the answer is both: an AI-narrated edition on the stores that accept it now, and a human-narrated edition for Audible once the book has proved itself.

If Audible matters most to you

Audible is the biggest audiobook store, so for some books it’s worth doing things its way:

  1. Hire a narrator through ACX. Pay per finished hour, or use Royalty Share and split your Audible royalties with the narrator for seven years. See how much an audiobook costs to make.
  2. Record it yourself. Your own voice is accepted, and it suits memoirs and nonfiction well.
  3. Watch for a Virtual Voice invite. If your Kindle ebook is eligible, it may appear on your Bookshelf.
  4. Go wide with AI now, add Audible later. Publish an AI-narrated edition on the stores that accept it, and add a human-narrated edition to Audible when it makes sense. Check ACX’s exclusivity terms first: exclusive distribution means Audible is the only place that edition can sell.

FAQ

Does Audible accept AI-narrated audiobooks?

Only through Amazon’s own programs. Audible sells AI-narrated audiobooks made with Virtual Voice (an invite-only KDP beta) and ACX Voice Replica (a beta for narrators). You can’t upload AI narration you made elsewhere through ACX.

Can I upload an ElevenLabs audiobook to ACX?

No. ACX requires human narration unless Audible authorizes otherwise, and that applies to every outside AI voice tool. Spotify accepts audiobooks made with ElevenLabs when you tick its digital voice box. See how to create an audiobook with ElevenLabs for the steps.

What is Amazon Virtual Voice?

KDP’s free AI narration for eligible Kindle ebooks. It’s an invite-only beta in the US. You pick a voice, edit the audio, set a price from $3.99 to $14.99 and earn 40%, and the audiobook sells on Audible and Amazon.

Can I use an AI clone of my own voice on ACX?

Not one made outside Amazon. ACX’s own Voice Replica beta lets narrators make a replica of their voice for ACX productions, but it’s a limited program for narrators.

Can I use AI to help prepare my manuscript for an ACX audiobook?

ACX’s rule is about the narration, so using AI to help edit or tidy your text isn’t the same as AI narration. Your book still has to follow Amazon’s content guidelines, and KDP asks you to disclose AI-generated content when you publish the ebook.

Will ACX ever accept AI narration?

Audible says it is working to accept third-party TTS content and will share more about timing later. No date has been announced.

How can I tell if an Audible audiobook is AI-narrated?

Audible labels Virtual Voice audiobooks, and voice replica titles are credited as narrated by the narrator’s voice replica.

Ready to publish with AI?

ACX isn’t open to outside AI narration yet, but most other stores are, and you can sell direct too. If you want to make an AI-narrated audiobook for those stores, our AI audiobook generator narrates your book with a voice for every character and makes store-ready files, with your first chapter free.
