How Much Does It Cost to Make an Audiobook?
Real 2026 prices for every way to make an audiobook, from a professional narrator to doing it yourself or using AI, plus the costs people forget.
In this article
Before you make an audiobook, you want to know what it will cost. The honest answer is that it depends on who reads it. In 2026, a 10-hour audiobook costs about $1,000 to $4,000 with a professional human narrator, $300 to $700 in equipment plus around 60 hours of your time if you record it yourself, and roughly $80 to $200 with AI narration. A few routes cost nothing upfront, but they come with conditions.
This guide breaks down every option with real 2026 prices, shows what a typical book costs, and lists the extra costs people forget.
What a 10-hour audiobook costs
Here’s the short version for a typical novel of about 90,000 words.
| Route | Upfront cost | Your time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experienced human narrator | $2,000 to $4,000 | A few hours of reviewing | $200 to $400 per finished hour, usually including editing and mastering |
| Beginner narrator | About $1,000 | More reviewing | About $100 per finished hour; quality varies |
| ACX Royalty Share | $0 | A few hours | You split royalties 50/50 with the narrator for 7 years, and must stay exclusive to Audible |
| Record it yourself | $300 to $700 in equipment | About 60 hours | ACX estimates 6.2 hours of work per finished hour |
| AI narration | About $80 to $200 | A few hours to fix and check | Some stores don’t accept AI narration |
How long will your audiobook be?
Everything in audiobook production is priced by the finished hour: one hour of final, edited audio. So the first step is working out how long yours will be.
ACX says most narrators read about 9,300 words per hour. That gives you:
| Words | Finished hours |
|---|---|
| 45,000 | About 5 |
| 70,000 | About 7.5 |
| 90,000 | About 10 |
| 140,000 | About 15 |
Multiply your word count by the rates below and you have a realistic budget.
The cost of a human narrator
Most narrators charge a per-finished-hour (PFH) rate. It’s paid per hour of the final audiobook, not per hour they work, so it covers all the time behind each finished hour.

As a guide in 2026:
- Beginner narrators: about $100 PFH. Cheaper, but quality and equipment vary.
- Experienced indie narrators: about $200 to $400 PFH. Reedsy says most independent producers charge in this range.
- Expert and celebrity narrators: $300 to $1,000 or more PFH.
A PFH rate usually includes preparation, recording, pickups (re-recording mistakes), editing, proofing, mastering and delivering store-ready files. Always ask what’s included, because some narrators charge separately for editing and mastering.
What a book costs at each rate:
| Length | $100 PFH | $250 PFH | $400 PFH | $1,000 PFH |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 hours | $500 | $1,250 | $2,000 | $5,000 |
| 10 hours | $1,000 | $2,500 | $4,000 | $10,000 |
| 15 hours | $1,500 | $3,750 | $6,000 | $15,000 |
Union narrators. There’s no public union rate card for audiobooks, but ACX sets a floor for union deals: at least $250 PFH for a paid production. The union’s 14% health and retirement contribution comes out of that rate, not on top of it.
No upfront cost: ACX Royalty Share
If you can’t pay a narrator upfront, ACX lets you pay them with a share of your Audible royalties instead.
- Royalty Share: no fee. Under Audible’s new 2026 royalty model, you and the narrator each get 25% of sales. The narrator keeps their share for seven years, and your audiobook must be exclusive to Audible.
- Royalty Share Plus: a smaller upfront fee plus the same royalty split.

Royalty Share costs nothing today, but it can cost more in the long run if the book sells well, and the exclusivity means you can’t sell on Spotify, Kobo or your own site. Many narrators only accept it for books with a proven audience.
The cost of recording it yourself
Reading your own book is the cheapest route in money and the most expensive in time.
Equipment:
| Item | Typical price |
|---|---|
| USB or condenser microphone | $100 to $200 |
| Audio interface (if your mic needs one) | About $170 |
| Pop filter | $10 to $30 |
| Recording software | Free (Audacity) to $60 (REAPER) |
| Sound treatment (panels, a vocal shield) | A few hundred dollars |
That adds up to about $300 to $700 for a decent home setup. A built-in booth can cost thousands, but most authors don’t need one.
Time: ACX estimates about 2 hours to record each finished hour, 3 hours to edit it and 1.2 hours to review it.

For a 10-hour book, that’s more than 60 hours of work, and new narrators often take longer. If you hire an engineer to edit and master your recording, budget around $75 to $150 per finished hour.
The cost of AI narration
AI narration has changed the maths. A full book can be narrated in hours instead of weeks, for a small fraction of a human narrator’s fee.
Free AI programs from the stores
Several stores now make AI audiobooks from your ebook for free, each with limits:
- Amazon Virtual Voice: free, but invite-only in the US, for eligible Kindle ebooks, and sold only through Amazon and Audible. Pays 40%.
- Google Play Books auto-narration: free “for a limited time”, for ebooks sold on Google Play, and you must keep selling on Google Play. Pays 52%.
- Apple Books digital narration: free through partners such as Draft2Digital and PublishDrive, English only, and can take one to two months.
- Spotify’s Audiobook Creation Tools: free for up to five audiobooks, US and English only.

These are good for testing the waters, but the audio is usually tied to one store, you have limited control over voices and pronunciation, and none of these programs is guaranteed to stay free.
AI audiobook tools
With an AI tool, you make the audiobook yourself and can sell it wherever AI narration is accepted.
- ElevenLabs: plans from $6 to $99 a month and up, charged by characters. A 90,000-word novel is about 550,000 characters, so roughly one month of its $99 Pro plan for a single pass, more if you regenerate sections.

- Audiobook Generator: credits by length, with chapters, a voice for every character, pronunciation fixes and store-ready files included. A 90,000-word novel needs about 550 credits in Standard quality, which the One book pack covers for $79, once. Premium quality uses twice the credits, so the same book fits the $149 pack. Your first chapter is free.

AI narration has one big limit to plan around: Audible’s ACX doesn’t accept AI narration from indie authors. Spotify, Google Play, Apple Books, Kobo and your own shop do. See the best places to sell audiobooks for each store’s rules.
The costs people forget
Narration is the biggest cost, but not the only one.
| Extra | Typical cost | Do you need it? |
|---|---|---|
| Square cover | $45 to $50 to adapt a premade cover; $600+ for a new design | Yes. Stores need a square cover, at least 2400 × 2400 (Apple asks for 3000 × 3000) |
| ISBN | $125 for one, $295 for ten (Bowker, US) | Sometimes. Spotify and ACX don’t need one; some distributors give one free |
| Editing and mastering (if not included) | $90 to $150 per finished hour | Only if your narrator doesn’t include it |
| Proofing | $30 to $75 per finished hour | Recommended for human narration |
| Studio hire | $30 to $50 an hour | Only if you record yourself without a quiet room |
| Music | Varies | No. It’s allowed in the opening and closing credits, but optional |
| Distribution | Free to 20% of earnings | Direct uploads to Spotify, Kobo and Google Play are free; distributors keep about 20% or charge a monthly fee |
Don’t forget your own time, too. Even with a narrator, you’ll spend hours answering questions, approving the first 15 minutes and checking the finished audio.
How to keep your costs down
- Lock your manuscript first. Changes after recording mean paying for pickups or re-narration.
- Fix pronunciations before narration. A list of names and places saves expensive corrections.
- Start with one store-ready format. MP3 chapter files work almost everywhere.
- Try AI for your backlist. Older titles that would never justify a $3,000 narrator can earn as audiobooks with AI narration.
- Keep your rights. Avoid long exclusive deals unless the numbers clearly work, so you can sell on every store and your own site.
- Sell direct as well. Selling on Gumroad, Shopify or Payhip keeps more of each sale and pays back production costs faster.
Is it worth it?
Divide your production cost by what you earn per copy. If you earn around $5 to $8 per sale, a $3,000 human-narrated audiobook needs roughly 400 to 600 sales to break even, while an $80 AI-narrated one needs about 10 to 16. For a debut or a backlist title, that difference decides whether an audiobook makes sense at all. For a bestselling series with an eager audience, a great human narrator can be worth every dollar.
