Payhip gives you a real online store for your audiobook, with audio previews on your sales page, and it handles the tax for you. To sell an audiobook on Payhip, add a new Digital Product, upload your chapter MP3s and M4B (up to 5 GB each), add a cover, description and price, add an audio preview, and publish. Buyers download it straight after paying.

It costs nothing to start, and the paid plans take less of each sale. This guide covers each step, the fees and the tax.

What Payhip costs

Payhip’s pricing page: Free Forever, Plus and Pro
Every Payhip plan has every feature. The difference is the fee per sale.
PlanMonthlyFee per sale
Free Forever$05%
Plus$292%
Pro$990%

Card or PayPal fees apply on top, from whichever payment processor you connect (Stripe’s standard rate is 2.9% + $0.30). The money goes straight into your PayPal or Stripe account after each sale. Start on the free plan; Plus only pays off once you sell about $1,000 a month.

Tax. Payhip collects, reports and pays EU and UK VAT on digital sales for you. From July 1, 2026, it also handles US sales tax and Canadian GST/HST and PST (but not Quebec’s QST). That saves you registering for VAT abroad.

How to sell your audiobook on Payhip, step by step

1. Get your files ready

Gather the chapter MP3s, the M4B and your square cover. You can upload the MP3s one by one, but a ZIP is easier for buyers to download.

2. Add a digital product

In your Payhip dashboard, go to Products, click Add new product and choose Digital Product.

3. Upload your files

Upload your ZIP of MP3s and your M4B. Each file can be up to 5 GB.

4. Add the title, cover, description and price

Write a description that sells: what the book is about, the length, who narrates it, and which files are included. Upload your cover; you can set your store to show square images, which suits audiobook covers.

For the price, type a fixed amount, or “0+” or “5+” to let buyers pay what they want. Under advanced options you can also offer variations, such as a cheaper MP3-only version and a full version with the M4B.

5. Add an audio preview

Payhip can show an audio player on your sales page, so people hear the narration before they buy. Previews must be MP3 files of up to 8 MB, so a few minutes from your first chapter works well. In the product’s advanced options, tick the option to upload audio files for listeners to preview.

Payhip’s steps: in a product’s Advanced options, tick “Upload audio files for listeners to preview with audio player”.

6. Publish and share

Publish the product, then share it from your website, newsletter, ebook back pages and social media. Payhip coupons are useful for launches and readers on your list.

How buyers get their audiobook

Buyers go straight to a download page after paying and get an email receipt with the download link. Payhip limits how many times each buyer can download, and you can change the limit in your settings. There’s no player for listening in the browser after purchase, so include the MP3s, which play on any device.

Make delivery easier with BookFunnel (optional)

If you’d like buyers to listen in an app, BookFunnel connects to Payhip and delivers your audiobook to its listening app and a browser player. It needs a paid BookFunnel plan with the audio add-on, and it only takes MP3 files of at least 192 kbps.

How to write a product page that sells

  • Lead with the promise. One or two lines on what the book is and who it’s for.
  • Put the preview near the top. Hearing the narration is the strongest reason to buy an audiobook.
  • List what’s included. Length, number of chapters, narrator, and the files: a ZIP of chapter MP3s for any device and an M4B for audiobook apps.
  • Be clear about AI narration. If the voice is AI, say so in the description.
  • Use your square cover, and set your store to show square product images so it isn’t cropped.

Offer editions with variations

Payhip’s variations let one product page sell more than one version, each with its own files and price. For an audiobook, that might be:

VariationFilesExample price
MP3 editionZIP of chapter MP3s$12.99
Complete editionZIP of MP3s, M4B, companion PDF$16.99

If you also sell the ebook on Payhip, a variation with both formats at a small discount is an easy upsell.

Launch and promotion tips

  • Coupons for your list. Create a percentage or fixed coupon for your newsletter, with an expiry date to create urgency.
  • Pay what you want for a limited time. A “5+” price during launch week lets fans pay more and lowers the barrier for new readers.
  • Share the product link everywhere. Your website, newsletter, social profiles and the back pages of your ebook.
  • Collect emails. Payhip can add buyers to your mailing list when they opt in, so every sale can become a reader you can reach again.

EU buyers and the right of withdrawal

From June 19, 2026, EU consumers must have an online way to withdraw from a purchase. For digital content like an audiobook, buyers only lose their 14-day right to withdraw once they expressly agree to get the files straight away. Payhip explains how this applies to your store in its help center, so read it before your first EU sale.

Before you publish: a checklist

  • Your ZIP of MP3s and the M4B are uploaded (up to 5 GB each).
  • The cover, description, length and narrator are in place.
  • An MP3 preview of up to 8 MB is added.
  • The price, any variations and launch coupons are set.
  • PayPal or Stripe is connected, and Payhip’s EU and UK VAT setting is on.
  • You’ve bought it yourself with a 100% coupon to check the download page and email.

Troubleshooting

The preview won’t upload. Previews must be MP3 files of 8 MB or less. Export a shorter clip, a few minutes is plenty.

A buyer has run out of downloads. Payhip limits downloads per purchase by default. Raise the limit in your account settings, under Advanced.

Prices show without VAT. You can choose whether VAT is added on top of your price or included in it. Change it in Payhip’s VAT settings.

Sales from Quebec. Payhip handles Canadian GST/HST and PST, but not Quebec’s QST. If you sell a lot there, check whether you need to register for it yourself.
