Audiobook Statistics and Market Trends (2026)
The latest numbers on sales, listeners, platforms, libraries and AI narration, each with its source, and what they mean for authors.
In this article
Audiobooks have grown every year for more than a decade, and 2025 was no different. We’ve gathered the latest numbers from the sources that measure the market best: the Audio Publishers Association, Pew Research, Edison Research, OverDrive and the platforms themselves. In 2025, US audiobook sales reached $2.43 billion, up 9% on 2024. 58% of American adults have now listened to an audiobook, and libraries lent 315.9 million digital audiobooks worldwide.
Every figure below links to where it comes from. Where sources disagree, we show both and explain why.
Audiobook sales and market size
US sales
The Audio Publishers Association (APA) surveys publishers every year. Its 2026 survey found:
- $2.43 billion in US audiobook sales in 2025, up 9% on 2024.
- Over 750,000 active titles in 2025, up 43% in a year.
- $136 million from “audio first” titles, made for audio before (or without) a print edition, up 50%.
- General fiction was the biggest genre at 27% of revenue, followed by science fiction and fantasy, romance, and mysteries and thrillers.

For context, the APA reported $2.22 billion for 2024, up 13%. Growth slowed a little in 2025, but the market added more titles than ever.
Global market size
Nobody publishes a definitive global figure, so the numbers you see are estimates from research firms, and they vary a lot:
| Research firm | 2025 global market | Forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Grand View Research | $11.0 billion | $58.5 billion by 2033 |
| Fortune Business Insights | $11.2 billion | $93.2 billion by 2034 |
Treat these as rough guides. They agree the global market is around $10 billion and growing fast, but their forecasts differ by tens of billions.
UK and Germany
- UK: digital audiobooks earned £255 million in 2025, up 10%, about a tenth of the UK consumer book market (Publishers Association).
- Germany: audiobook revenue grew 13.2% in 2025 while the book market as a whole shrank 2.7%. Streaming and downloads each brought in about 47% of audiobook revenue, and CDs about 5% (Börsenverein).
Who listens to audiobooks
How many people listen
| Source | Finding | Who was asked |
|---|---|---|
| APA 2026 | 58% have ever listened (about 157 million people) | US adults 18+ |
| Edison Research, Infinite Dial 2026 | 37% listened in the past year (about 107 million) | Americans 12+ |
| Pew Research | 26% listened in the past year | US adults 18+ |
The figures differ because the surveys ask different questions of different groups. Pew’s is the longest-running: it has tracked the share of US adults who listened in the past year since 2011.
| Year | Listened to an audiobook in the past year (Pew) |
|---|---|
| 2011 | 11% |
| 2018 | 18% |
| 2019 | 20% |
| 2021 | 23% |
| 2025 | 26% |

The APA’s 2025 survey found 51% had ever listened, so its figure rose 7 points in a year.
Age, gender and education (Pew, 2025)
- Age: 32% of 18 to 29 year olds and 33% of 30 to 49 year olds listened in the past year, against 23% of 50 to 64s and 13% of over-65s.
- Gender: 24% of men and 27% of women.
- Education: 35% of college graduates, against 17% of those with a high school education or less.
Audiobook listeners skew younger than print readers. Spotify says almost 60% of its audiobook listeners in France are 18 to 34.
How people listen
From the APA’s 2026 consumer survey of US audiobook listeners:
- Listeners averaged 3.8 audiobooks in the past year, and 26% listened to four or more.
- The top reasons: they can multitask (86%), listen on the go (84%), and use it as an alternative to screen time (70%).
- How they got audiobooks in the past year: bought from a website or app (49%), a subscription (48%), a library app (46%), and credits from an audiobook service (42%).
- 45% listened to a free copy on YouTube in the past year, up from 38% in 2025. Many of those are pirated, the APA warns.
Edison Research’s Share of Ear study found that 8% of Americans 13+ listened to an audiobook on a given day in 2025, up from 3% in 2016.
Audible’s research with NielsenIQ (18,000 listeners in 11 countries, October 2026) adds:
- 63% bought a print book or ebook after listening to an audiobook by the same author.
- 65% look for more books read by a narrator they like.
- More than half deliberately swap screen time for audio.
That first figure matters for authors: an audiobook doesn’t just earn on its own, it sells your other formats too.
Platforms
Spotify
Spotify has become a major audiobook store since adding audiobooks to Premium in 2023. In October 2026 it said:

- Monthly audiobook listeners grew nearly 40% in a year, and listening hours more than 30%.
- It’s expanding audiobooks from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026, reaching over 750 million people.
- Audiobooks+ has more than one million subscribers and over $100 million in yearly revenue.
- Its catalogue holds more than 700,000 audiobooks.
For self-published authors, that’s a big new audience: Spotify for Authors is free, non-exclusive and accepts AI narration. See our guide to publishing on Spotify.
Audible
Audible, the biggest audiobook store, says:
- Its membership grew nearly 800% between 2015 and 2025.
- Listeners are in more than 225 countries and territories, and listening time grew by double digits in 2025 (up 73% in Brazil).
- There are fewer than two million audiobooks available in the world, compared with 100 to 150 million print books and ebooks.
That last figure is the clearest opportunity in this whole report. Most books still have no audiobook at all.
Storytel
Storytel, the leading audiobook streaming service in Scandinavia, had 2.75 million paying subscribers in mid-2026, up 7%, with more than 2 million audiobooks and ebooks in 55 languages.
Libraries
Libraries are one of the biggest audiobook channels. OverDrive, which runs the Libby app, reported for 2025:
- 315.9 million digital audiobooks borrowed worldwide, up 13%.
- 379.4 million ebooks borrowed, up 3%. Audiobooks are growing four times faster.
In US public libraries, digital audiobooks make up 70% of adult audio circulation and 56% of youth audio circulation (APA library survey, 2024 data).
AI narration
AI narration is growing fast from a small base:
- AI-narrated titles made up just 0.03% of US audiobook sales revenue in 2025, though the APA says both the number of titles and listening grew (APA).
- Only 16% of US audiobook listeners have heard an AI-narrated audiobook (APA).
- Willingness to try one fell from 70% in 2025 to 61% in 2026 (APA). Audible’s global research found 50% open to it.
- Audible lists over 50,000 titles narrated by its Virtual Voice.
- Spotify began testing AI audiobook creation tools for self-published authors in 2026.
Two things are true at once: most listeners are open to AI narration, and they’re wary of poor quality. That makes honest labelling and careful checking important. Our guides to where you can publish AI-narrated audiobooks and fixing mispronunciations cover both.
What this means for authors
- The market is still growing. 9% growth in the US and 13% in German audiobook revenue in a flat book market show demand is real.
- Most books have no audiobook. With fewer than two million audiobooks against well over 100 million books, an audiobook still helps you stand out.
- Listeners buy your other books. Nearly two-thirds bought a print or ebook after an audiobook by the same author.
- Go wide. Spotify’s growth, library lending and subscription services mean Audible isn’t the only place listeners are. See the 8 best places to sell audiobooks.
- Cost is no longer the barrier. An AI audiobook generator makes an audiobook for a fraction of a human narrator’s fee, so more of your backlist can be in audio.
